"so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him." John 13:4-5 (NIV)
Jesus demonstrated His love and eternal cleansing to His disciples by taking on the role of a lowly servant. Jesus wrapped a towel around His waist, got on His knees and washed His disciples' feet.
In the ancient East, the people's feet were the filthiest part of their body. They wore open-toed sandals as they walked miles through dirt and mud. What Jesus did was a deliberate act- a token of love - an example of what He was about to do, not only for His followers, but for the whole world.
You see, Jesus wanted to show His servitude. He wanted to let the disciples know, that if they allow Him, He is willing to cleanse the filthiest part of their body. Later, they will come to realize He is going to be the ultimate sacrifice for all their sins - cleansing their hearts.
Jesus did not come into the world to judge it, but rescue those who are lost.
When was the last time you put your feet in the basin of Jesus?
He wants to wash the grimiest parts of your life. Your heart may be a caked on mess of hurts, habits, and anger. He wants to give you a clean, new start.
First, you must admit that your heart is filthy, full of sin that has hurt God and those around you. You will never be cleansed until you confess you are dirty. There is forgiveness waiting for you!
Pray and talk to Jesus today! Acknowledge your heart is dirty and it's time to surrender it over to the basin of Jesus. His blood on the cross will cleanse you. He will take up your pain- your regrets- and give you a new life, a new path full of hope.
"That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
As the Scripture says, 'Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.' " Romans 10:9-11 (NIV)
